Draw a diagonal line to connect the north-western and the south-eastern
corners of your plot. Now it has two triangles - one in north-east
and another in south-west.
The north-eastern triangle is known as the Sun region, while the
one is south-west is known as the Moon region. Construction is the
Sun region should be light while in the Moon region, it should be
heavy, so that the Moon region could have more weight.
Thickness of the walls also should be less in the Sun region than
those in the Moon region. The sun is rather mild in the morning,
so the thin walls in the north and the east will allow the house
to harness its goodness fully. But as the day progresses, the sun
intensifies. From noon till evening, the sun is most intense. So
the thick walls in the south and the west protect the inmates from
the harmful effects of the intense sun all throughout afternoon
session.
PLACE OF COSMOS IN VAASTU SPHERE
In you play chess, you might have certainly seen a chessboard.
It has sixty four black and white squares crammed into a single,
larger chequered square. Imagine your plot as an analogue of a chessboard
and has sixty-four squares crammed into a single larger square.
Even if your plot has a rectangular or oval or circular shape the
same analogy applies well. Now mark out the central most four squares
in your plot. These four squares together represent place of cosmos.
If you imagine that your plot has eighty-one (instead of sixty-four)
squares crammed into a single, larger square, the central most nine
squares will then represent the place of the cosmos in your plot.
A place of cosmos at the centre of the plot is the junction of
all the eight directions. It should be, therefore, left vacant.
In other words no construction should be carried out on the Brahmasthana
or the place of cosmos and the same must be utilised as the courtyard.
Since this place is frequently and commonly used by all the inmates,
no heavy material should be placed here either.
VAASTU Shastra also dictates very clearly which type of construction
should take place in which direction guarded by a particular deity.

That is the bathroom must be in the east, the kitchen in the south-east,
dining room in the west, the cattle-shed in the north-west, treasury
room or chest in the north and temple should be built in the north-east
direction. There is the presence of all the deities in a narrow
space at Brahmasthana. As such it causes intense vacuum, because
nature of all the deities is different. That is why, this place
is regarded as belonging to Brahma and provision of having a courtyard
at this place developed.
That is also why, there is a provision of construction all around
the courtyard and providing it with lot of doors and windows. An
open courtyard in the centre also plays an important role in exhausting
stale air and general ventilation of the whole house. Hence, an
open courtyard in the centre has been an integral part of the traditional
Indian houses.
Following table gives a guideline as to which construction will
suit which corner of your plot.

SOURCE OF WATER
Underground sources of water have already been discussed. Lets
now discuss regarding the position of water storage tank installed
on the roof.
In the construction of modern houses handy availability of water
in kitchen, bathroom, toilet etc. has become topmost priority. In
the modern life style, convinience related to handy availability
of water cannot be ruled out. But these requirements can't be met
with fully from underground sources. By installing an overhead water
storage tank, however water can easily be led to various outlet
points in kitchen, toilet, bathroom etc. Consideration of direction
is must for the installation of overhead water-storage tank.
If you have to get a water storage tank built or installed a readymade
one on your roof; get it built or installed in the north-west corner
or in the west. It should not be built or installed in the north-east
direction, because heavy constructions is forbidden in this direction.
In the north-western corner also, the water storage tank must not
touch the northern wall. If you are intending to install a readymade
tank in the north-west, make sure that it is not higher than the
construction in the south-west direction. If south-west direction
is free from any construction, you may get your tank installed in
that corner also.
BASEMENT
Now-a-days with increasing population and decreasing space, basement
is being built in more and more houses in order to increase usable
floor area. Basement usually remains warm in winter and cool in
summer. If you wish to build a basement in your house, keep the
plinth level higher so that a ventilator can be provided in the
basement.
TOILET
For the importance of toilet, it would be sufficient to say that
all of us begin our day from the toilet. Since time immemorial,
people started their days from open spaces, fields, farms etc. Even
today, this is a common practice in the rural areas. But with changing
life styles, toilets came to have an inseparable place in the house
building. Efficient disposal of night soil is the main purpose behind
getting a toilet built in the houses. Two types of toilet are more
common. 1) Separate and 2) Common with the bathroom. Now a days,
people also want to have toilet attached to their bedrooms.
Wash basin and the mirror should be installed on the northern and
the eastern walls. Drainage for the effluents must be given in the
north-eastern corner. There is no restriction regarding the choice
of seat. You may get installed one of your choice- Indian or western.
The whole toilet system could be built in any direction except
north-east, east and the north of Brahmasthana. Only the rules given
below should be followed:
- Orientation of the water-closet must be in the north-south direction.
- Wash basin and mirror must be installed on the northern or the
eastern wall.
- Slope of the toilet floor must be in the north-east.
- Always give a window or ventilator in your toilet to admit ample
of sun and fresh air. You may keep floral bouquet and air fresheners
as well in the toilet.
BATHROOM
East is the most suitable direction to build the bathroom. But
now-a- days, most people prefer to have a bathroom attached to their
bedrooms. Hence bathroom can be built in the south-central, or the
west-central positions as well, and attached to two bedrooms so
that inmates of borth the bedrooms could use it. Slope of the bathroom's
floor should also be in the north-east direction and the mirror
should be fixed on the northern or the eastern wall. Water supply
must be from the north-east. Wash basin must be installed on the
northern wall while shower should be installed on the western wall.
Geyser and washing machine should be installed in the south-east
corner of the bathroom.
KITCHEN
Kitchen is also an important part of a house. As every one knows
fire is needed to cook the food, hence kitchen is preferably built
in the fire angle or the south-east corner of the plot. Gas cylinder,
stove, heater etc. should be placed in such an angle that the cook
may face the east while cooking. In the standing type of kitchen,
make sure that the northern end of the working table does not touch
the northern wall. Drainage must be provided in the north-east.
The floor must also have a slope in north-east direction. Drinking
water, water-filter etc. too must be provided in the north-east.
Shelf, cabinet etc. must be provided on the southern and the western
walls. A window must be given in the eastern wall to facilitate
air flow and admit more of the sun.
If it is not possible to build the kitchen in the south-east corner,
build it then in the north-west corner i.e. in air angle that is
friendly to the fire. All the other things, however, should be followed
as directed in the preceding paragraph. A small family can have
a common kitchen and dining room.
BEDROOM
Sleep is perhaps the most wonderful gift of nature to all the animals
including human being. It replenishes the energy we lose during
our waking hours. If for some reason, one is deprived of the sleep,
he cannot work properly the next day. Hence, a comfortable and cozy
bedroom is necessary in a house for the owner to have a peaceful
sleep every night.
A bed room must preferably be built in the Moon region of the plot.
South-west is therefore, the most favourable direction to have a
bedroom for the owner of the house, if he wishes to have stability
in his life. Besides south-west, extreme west and extreme south
are also favourable to have bedroom. In these directions attached
toilet/bathroom can also be built between the two bedrooms. Kids'
bedroom can be built in the north-west direction.
Walls of the bedroom should be painted pink. Mirror and almirah
should be kept in the north-west corner while television, telephone
etc. may be kept in the south-east corner.
You should also not adorn the walls of your bedroom with the pictures
of the gods and the goddesses and have treasury and storage of cereals
in the bedroom. In their stead adorn your bedroom walls with the
posters containing amorous poses of beautiful models, entrancing
natural scenes and artistic figurines of elves.
DRAWING ROOM
As per the position of the owner, many people visit one's house.
These guests are welcomed and treated in the drawing room of the
house. The drawing room therefore should have enchanting decoration.
It should have such a sitting arrangement that the host could face
the east or the north while meeting the guests. Also the face of
the host should be less illuminated than that of the guest. And
if possible there should be a wall behind the host.
Showcase, almirah etc. should be given in the southern or the western
walls. In the drawing room, the television and telephone etc. must
be stowed in the south-east corner, whereas sofa-set, centre-table
etc. should be kept in the south-west, west or the south direction.
Flower pot and vase must be kept in the north-west direction.
Drawing room must be built adjoining the main entrance or the porch.
