WORSHIP ROOM
North-east is the best direction to have the worship room. Its
entrance must face the east or the south. North is the abode of
Lord Shiva hence His idol must be installed in the worship room
so that we may face the north while worshipping. Alternatively,
you may face the west as well while worshipping Shiva.
Idol of Ganesh must be installed in the south. Idol or picture
of Hanumana should be installed in the north. Install the idols
of all the other gods in such a way that you face north or east
while worshipping.
STUDY ROOM
North-east or a space between east and central positions is considered
excellent. Apart from these two, south-western corner or a space
between the extreme west and central position is also considered
better.
Walls of the study room should be painted light green or light
yellow. Green is governed by Mercury that rules faculties like writing
and study. Yellow is the colour of Jupiter, the ruler of mind. Picture
or idol of Saraswati, the goddess of learning should be installed
in the study room. Alternatively, you can have pictures of some
religious teacher, parents and religious scriptures as well in your
study room.
CHILDREN'S AND ENTERTAINTMENT ROOM
Children's room should be build in the north-western corner. North-west
is the angle governed by air and the Moon and gives energy thereby
developing children's natural curiosity and knowledge.
Room of a small kid should have ample toys but should not have
anything that causes hurdle to the kid's movements. It should also
have sufficient ventilation. Teenaged kids may decorate their room
as per their hobbies and interests.
Entertainment room must also be built in the north-west direction.
But the means of entertainment should occupy the south, south-west
or west direction in the room. North-east, north and east direction
should be left vacant.
COURTYARD
Brahmasthana at the centre of the plot is the best location to
have the courtyard. In this regard Brihatsanhita says:
SUKHAMICHCHHAN BRAHMANAM YATNADRAKSHED GRIHI
GRIHAKTAH STHAM | ACHCHHISTADYUPDHAT GRIHPATI RUPATAPYATE TASMIN
||
Those, who desire for all kinds of comforts and richness, must
take full care of the Brahmasthan in their plot. It should be reserved
for the courtyard and no unholy and impure things like shoes and
chappals, garbage etc. ought to be left in the courtyard nor should
the toilet be built there.
If the courtyard is kept dirty, younger ones of the household will
begin to disregard the elders of the family. Well or hand pump also
should not be dug or bored in the centre of the courtyard.
DINING ROOM
Dining room must be built in the south-west corner or in the western
direction. In the modern houses for the sake of maximum utilization
of space, drawing and dining rooms are used commonly. Hence, locations
up to west central and north west are considered ideal to have dining
room.
You may build your dining room in the north also and have the treasury
in it as well. Members of the family may dine sitting around the
dining table, but a chair on one side must be left vacant. Except
south, you may face any direction while dining. If you have no room
for dining purpose, it will be better to dine in the kitchen itself.
DRESSING ROOM
Dressing and personal embellishment have been an integral part
of Indian civilization since ancient times. Our literature abounds
in the description of embellishments from tip to toe. That is why,
dressing room has a place of importance in VAASTU Shastra. But in
modern time, entire concept of dressing has come within the confinement
of a single dressing table. Dressing room can be clubbed with the
bathroom. South-west is the most suitable corner to have the dressing
room. Hence, it can be built with the bedroom of the house owner.
Alternatively, the dressing table can be kept along the eastern
and southern walls of the bedrooms.
TREASURY
Modern age can aptly be described as an age of wealth. Only those
people are regarded as successful who earn lot of wealth in less
time. Kuber is the lord of wealth and the ruling deity of the north
direction. Hence, VAASTU Shastra dictates to store wealth and valuable
items in the northern parts that is under the domain of Kuber. Thus
stored, the valuables see an increase in them. Treasury should never
be kept in the bedroom or the drawing room. Colour of the walls
of the treasure room should be yellow. In the mid-part of the northern
wall, Shri Yantra or an idol of Lakshmi should be installed. The
real treasury should be build or installed in the north-west corner.
Same religious scripture must be placed on the treasury. A treasury
of iron is considered as the best.
VERANDAH
As per VAASTU Shastra construction of a house has two parts. 1)
The Sun region and 2) The Moon region. In the Moon region, construction
must be heavier than that in the Sun region. Verandah is a lighter
type of construction hence, it must be built in the north-eastern
corner. It can also be built in the north and the east directions
as well.
Pillars supporting the roof of the Verandah should be round in
shape. Regarding the construction of Verandah, Vrihatsanhita says:
SHALATRIBHAGTULYA KARTAVYA VITHIKA BAHIRBHAVANAT
|
That is, outside the floor area and having one third width of the
rooms verandah or gallery must be built.
SAYASHRAYAMITI PASHCHAT SAVASHTAMBHAM TU PARSHV
SANSTHIYA ||
That is, verandah could be built all around the house also.
BALCONY
Balcony should be provided on the northern or the eastern sides.
If you have to build balcony in the southern and the western sides
also, make sure that balconies in the east and the north are larger.
TERRACE
Terrace should be built in the north-eastern corner or alternatively
in the north and the east. But its height must be less then that
of the main house.
CANOPY OVER THE DOOR
Like terrace, door canopy also must be kept at a lower height than
the main house. It should also be built in north, north-eastern
or east, north-eastern corners. Outer pillars of the canopy should
be round in shape than angular.
PORTICO
North-east is the most suitable direction to built portico. Its
height also should be less than the main house. It protects the
vehicle from the sun and the rains. Usually the roof of the portico
serves as the terrace; but the two can be distinct as well.
STORE ROOM
South-central part of the plot is the best location for building
the store room. Shelf and almirahs, however should be given on the
southern and the western walls of the store room. To store lighter
items, shelves can be given on the northern and the eastern walls
as well.
If your plot is too small to accomadate a separate store room,
you may build almirahs, as high as the roof, on the southern and
the western walls. Thus built, the almirah will have ample storage
capacity.
STAIRCASE
Stairs can be given to the inside as well as to the outside depending
upon the need. It can be added anywhere in east-west or the north-south
axis. Then the stairs should take a southward or dextral turn, so
that the person who is riding them should take clockwise turn only.
Usualy, location of the stairs in the south, south-west and the
west is considered as favorable. On the first floor, a little room
is built to cover the stairs. If it is in the south-west corner
its okay; otherwise there should be some construction higher than
this in south-west corner.
Number of steps is a stair must be odd. That is divide the number
of steps, you wish to get built, by three (3). If the remainder
is two (2), the number is odd. Odd number of steps is auspicious
and beneficial.
Ideally the height of each step should fixed at ten or twelve inches
in the residential houses. But in public places, schools, hospitals,
market complexes, etc. height of each step could be fixed at one
foot to one and a half feet.
SERVANT'S ROOM
In big houses rooms for the servants are also built. Arrangements
for the staying of the servants, who always accompany the lord,
should be made outside the main building. There is a great different
between the mental, intellectual and social status of the lord and
his servants. Hence, servants quarter must be built apart because
it castes adverse effects on the main building. As per the dictates
of VAASTU Shastra, servants quarter must be built in the south or
the west and never in the north or the east directions.
If servant's quarter has to be built in the southwest corner, its
plinth level must be must at least a foot higher than the main building.
If servant's quarter is to be built in the south-east or the north-west
corner, it should be at least three feet apart from the eastern
and the northern walls of the main building. If, you wish to build
the garage, it will be better to have it in the south-western corner
with servant's room on the roof of it.
GARAGE
In the north-eastern corner, canopy or portico is built in which
the vehicles make temporary halt. To park them permanently, garage
is required. Garage must be built in the south-western or the north-
western corner. If these corners are not vacant, garage can be built
in the south-eastern corner as well but never in the north-eastern
corner.
It is also necessary that the northern and eastern boundary walls
should not be used as the outer wall of the garage. Instead it should
be built at least three feet inside the boundary wall. If garage
is built in the south-western corner, servant's quarter can also
be built on its roof.
